About me and Hip Hop:
- Born in the Philippines, my first dance lesson was in hula dancing when I was about three years-
old. I moved with my family to America shortly after and fell in love with the movements of the Solid
Gold Dancers, Michael Jackson, and Janet Jackson. I taught myself how to dance and also
enjoyed roller skating at the local roller rink where I would continually win the weekly dance
contests.
- Throughout my high school years, I was going through the club circuit in Connecticut, Boston, and
New York. I battled in underground clubs in New York city combining the techniques of freestyling,
popping, locking, and breaking. I learned Hip Hop and House movement from the music and
dancing with people who lived completely in love and respect for this dance culture.
- In Boston, I was a dance promoter for several night clubs and performed with local Hip Hop dance
groups. I began teaching for the Gold's Gym in Boston and Arlington, MA. And from there began
teaching at several community and educational centers in Brookline, Cambridge, and Newton, MA.
- After being a self-directed dancer for many years, Sybil Huggins at the Jeannette Neill Dance
Studio in Boston was my teacher for over three years in Hip Hop.
- In New York, I have trained at Steps on Broadway under Robin Dunn. In addition to private and
group instruction in both Hip Hop and Yoga, I am also currently teaching dance aerobics
in Manhattan.
About me and Yoga:
- My first exposure to Yoga was at Trinity College, under the guidance of Hi-Ah Park, Korean Shaman
and Visiting Associate Professor in Theater and Dance. I can still remember the awkwardness of
my first Downward-facing Dog. I worked with her in an independent study course on Ecstatic
Movement, Dance, and Journaling and as a student in her Asian Meditation and Movement class.
- After college, although I was drawn to the idea of Yoga, I had difficulty finding an approach to the
practice that resonated with me the most. Until, I travelled to Esalen Institute in Big Sur and trained
under Mark Whitwell in his Yoga from the Source Workshop. I learned the basic tenets of Yoga
and how it can be individualized to suit the practitioner. Immediately afterwards, I searched for a
program that balanced science and Western approaches to Yoga in combination with its subtle
energy and spiritual practices. I completed my 200-hour teacher certification at Sonic Yoga in
Manhattan under the guidance of Lauren Hanna and Jonathan Fields.
